Wednesday Wishlist: The Beach Essentials

(A day late, I know, I apologise. This has sort of become the norm now. So much so that I probably don't even have to mention it anymore!)

When the glorious sun is out and we're now into the month of May (which for me means only one another month to go until I'm jetting off to Tenerife with the best friends anyone could ever ask for) there's nothing more expected in my household than an attempt at an organised mindset as I conclude the last of my holiday spending to fill up the suitcase with everything a gal needs; amplifying my concealed excitement whilst doing so, of course.

Summer shopping is my favourite kind. Not just because of the mere thought of the short space until you're spending your week abroad, sipping cocktails by the pool and dressing up to the nines after a day of lounging and tanning it up in red hot temperatures, but because of the variety, the pop of bright colours and the fun you can have mixing and matching your clothing and accessories. There's no rule to say just because you're spending the day in between sand and waves, dodging the seaweed and running as though your life depends on it as you avoid the scorching floor, sweating any minimal makeup off, rocking the beachy hair and getting lost in copious amounts of food, drink, and even a good book, that you can't look the bomb simultaneously because you can, and this list obviously proves so.

Needless to say I'm not a light packer and nothing changes once I arrive on foreign ground. Along with the sunscreen, the lip balm, the cooling mist, the hairbrush, and the rest of the toiletries you carry, there's some essentials in the fash-un department that you are bound to attach yourself to (only it's the narrowing the divine selection down to a bag size that's the problem!).

It goes without saying that you need swimwear of your own tastes. For me that includes absolutely everything (and I mean, everything). I put my middle finger up to the standards of both society and my body shape and I go for the designs I love. Embroidery? YES. Plunging? YES. Pretty, dainty two pieces? YES. A swimsuit that somehow makes my thighs look even larger than they already are? HELL TO THE YES. When you're roaming the beach it's like a sense of freedom and that shows in the comfort of your confidence. Obviously a cover up doesn't ever go amiss, either. Not necessarily to cover up but to throw on when you need to head to the bar, when you're strolling back or freshly showered. The sheer, floating material of your mix of sarongs, playsuits, kaftans, kimonos and sundresses is a forever favourite of mine as you can look the part whilst feeling the part effortlessly. The detail is another characteristic to shout about, especially in a co-ord set as you have double the vivacity! All florals, lace up, and bold prints are a summer cliche, and that follows on into the shoe and accessory department. I always think it's handy to have a pair of both shoes with a fastening and an opening where you can just flick them off as you give your feet a rest. I also think it's handy to be safer than sorry with a choice of fashion friendly and UV friendly sunnies, but that's probably already a given.

Indubitably, a day of laughter and relaxation and photographs and golden skin isn't achievable without a bag to carry the incentives in. This is your most important decision because it will be carted around for the entirety and A) you don't want a broken back, B) nor a broken bag, and C) it's got to be made to cater for both the weight and the quantity of items. A sensible starter is to aim for holdall size, then moving on to the solidness of the material and finally the storage pockets. I recently came across MAHI Leather, a luggage and bag company that is made to order not only for you to personalise but to reduce wastage and cut out the middle men. They have everything from duffle bags, to holdalls, to backpacks, to satchels, to totes and each one is lovingly made in soft, beautiful leather with a strong build and a classic aesthetic. Aaaand just as you thought they couldn't improve their ethic, every $1.50 made from sales is donated to FRANK Water, a charity that provides clean water for over 100 families in India... which means as you're enjoying the privileges beside the fresh waves, you can be rest assured there's hope for the same around the world.
